Flat Rock was first settled in 1821 by Michael Vreelandt and family from New York State. It was platted and recorded as Vreelandt in 1834. From the smooth rock bed of the Huron River running through it, it was renamed Smooth Rock. In 1838, the Gibralter & Flat Rock Company laid out and platted out an additional area under the name of City of Flat Rock. It was given a post office as Flat Rock on May 20, 1872 and was incorporated as a village in 1923.
